What is it with directors today, leaving behind the franchises that so clearly are a product of their own awesome styles, yes Michael Bay’s bombast action and penchant for explosions may not be to everyone’s taste but heck, he is undoubtedly the greatest director of action out there which means today is a sad day as Bay has said that he will not be returning for Transformers 3, should Paramount decide to make it (they did, incidentally already announce it will be released in 2011).

“It’s easy to go shoot an art movie in a winery in the South of France,” he said. “But people have no idea how hard it is to create something like Transformers.

“They (the critics) review me before they’ve even seen the movie.”

It seems like a strange time in his career to be worrying about what the critics think, but it seems Bay’s mid-life crisis is genuine. He adds, “After the three and a half years I’ve spent making these movies, I feel like I’ve had enough of the Transformers world.

“I need to do something totally divergent, something without any explosions.”

Though bear this in mind before you shed a tear for Transformers 3, directed by Brett ratner, that Bay is a director prone to changing his mind and lying for the sake of publicity, let us not forget he swore blind that Megatron would NOT appear in Transformers 2, so go figure. Also there was a point he vowed not to return for this sequel, so for now, don’t count your chickens…
