If you weren’t happy with Spider-Man 3 – um, was anybody? – and its treatment of Venom, then you may have reason to rejoice. Sony has officially confirmed a Spider-Man spin-off focusing on none other than Venom himself. Hired to helm the script is the writing team from Zombieland, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.

Unfortunately, there isn’t much to say about the movie this early in the game. Wernick says that the pair is basically sworn to secrecy about the project, but they did confirm that they were big fans of the character and planned to treat him with the respect he deserves. “We read [Venom] growing up, but we were not experts,” admits Reese. “We certainly know the mythology of Venom, but went back and learned more when it became clear that we could actually get this job.”

Reese also confesses that he’s already worried about potential backlash from fans of the comic and Venom. “There’s a burden on you to meet the expectations of people,” he explains.

What do you think? Can a Venom movie work? And should Spidey make a cameo?
