With toy franchises like Transformers and GI Joe riding high for studios, it’s no surprise that Stretch Armstrong would rise again like some plastic zombie. Steve Oedekerk – who penned Bruce Almighty (and, shudder, helped write Evan Almighty) – is just the latest in a long string of writers who have taken a crack at the 1970’s toy.

Stretch, a blond-haired toy named for his stretchy rubber limbs, has been floating around Hollywood’s development pool since at least 1998, with actors such as Danny DeVito and Jackie Chan attached at different times. It’s been seemingly dormant for years, but with Oedekerk on board, it looks like Universal wants to leap fully aboard the toy-to-film bandwagon.

Is there any toy they won’t consider? It would appear not!
