John Malkovich has joined the cast of Jonah Hex, the comic book adaptation starring Josh Brolin as a horribly-scarred American Civil War veteran. And surprise surprise, he’s playing the bad guy – or at least the worse guy to Hex’s cynical anti-hero.

In the comics, Quentin Turnbull (Malkovich) was the father of Hex’s best friend, Jeb Turnbull. After the passage of the Emancipation Proclamation, Confederate soldier Hex surrendered to Union forces, but refused to tell them where his fellow soldiers were camped. The Union soldiers figured out which way he had come from the mud in his horse’s shoes, slaughtered all his comrades, and framed Hex as a traitor – leaving Turnbull blaming Hex for his son’s death and fixated on revenge on the soldier-turned-gunslinger.

Horton Hears A Who‘s Jimmy Hayward is directing from a script by Crank team Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, in what I hope is sha[ping up to be a comic-ier spin on my most favourite of genres, the Western.
