Brace yourself for “The British are coming” headlines, because Danny Boyle’s Anglo-Indian Slumdog Millionaire and Kate Winslet pretty much swept the Golden Globes between them this year.

Slumdog took four awards – Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Original Score. The Wrestler was the second most lauded film, with two awards (Best Actor – Drama for Mickey Rourke and Best Song), and Kate Winslet was the most lauded person, winning Best Actress – Drama for Revolutionary Road and Best Supporting Actress for The Reader.

Those who persist in viewing Hollywood’s awards season like the Olympics will also be pleased to know that Britain’s Sally Hawkins won Best Actress – Musical or Comedy for Happy-Go-Lucky, while fans of casual swearing will be delighted that Colin Farrell took Best Actor – Comedy or Drama for In Bruges.

Elsewhere, Wall-E took Best Animation, Waltz With Bashir landed Best Foreign Film and Heath Ledger, in perhaps the least surprising (and imho the most deserving) result of the night, landed Best Supporting Actor for The Dark Knight. Vicky Cristina Barcelona took Best Picture – Musical or Comedy to complete the main awards. It’s a bit hard for me too judge my feelings on the outcomes as I’ve by and large yet to see most of the big nominee’s, though i can’t help thinking that Benjamin Button will end up as my personal favourite and certainly not Slumdog, but I’ve been wrong before….just look at Wall-E!

In TV, the big winners were HBO’s John Adams and 30 Rock, with four and three wins respectively, with single salutes for Mad Men, True Blood and Recount. Fans of The Wire may now riot, incidentally, at its snub for so much as a nomination.
