Halloween, A Nightmare On Elm Street, Amityville Horror, The HitcherFriday The 13th, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Childs Play… and now Poltergeist. That’s right folks, another beloved horror franchise is getting the remake treatment and we’re not sure how we should be feeling about it.

While some such re-imaginings have been utter dross (Rob Zombie’s Halloween, for example), others have actually been kinda okay (Marcus Nispel’s Chainsaw) and following some rather scary footage of Friday The 13th as seen at Empire Movie-Con this past weekend, it looks as though some could actually surpass their predecessors. But the news that a Poltergeist script commission for Boogeyman scribes Juliet Snowden and Stiles White fills us with a little bit of dread, mostly because these are the self-same scribblers who have been tasked with re-writing Hitchcock’s The Birds.

MGM is planning to revisit director Tobe Hooper and producer/co-writer Steven Spielberg 1982 horror film in the hope that it will recreate the $122 million worldwide gross that the original earned. There’s no word on cast or director yet but the story (in which a suburban home built over an Indian burial ground is infested with nasty spooks) looks set to remain in place.

No release date is set yet but I’ll keep you up to date with all the latest developments.
